How The Dog Began the Desire to Dig
(A Just-So Story by Lucas Lawrence)
In the far off times, long long ago, O Best Beloved, there was a dog. Whose name (everybody calls him Scruffy) but his real name is Scruffian Bones the Third. He would dig to get his food, like insects and beetles and shrubs and grubs but mostly rats and other rodents and the like. Now some of you might think that he would look very dirty and scratchy and obviously scruffy, but actually he was quite handsome. He had a very shiny brown fur coat. His ears were quite handsome also. Because O Best Beloved, the dirt would get on his ears then he would jump into the refreshing cool water of the pond nearby. The name of the pond was Emerald pond, because if they could swim down to the bottom they would find a lot of emeralds. Everyone has tried to swim down to the bottom, but they would run out of air. Now Scruffy jumped into the water and he decided himself to swim to the bottom and dig up all the emeralds. He took a deep breath and tried to swim down to the bottom. He reached the bottom and began to dig and dig and dig. "What fun!" he thought. He finally reached an emerald. He picked the emerald up and swam to the surface to get a breath of air. He set the emerald on shore under the weeping willow tree. Then after hours of digging and coming up for air he decided that he had enough emeralds to live the rest of his life. To this day, Scruffy lives in a mansion decorated with emeralds everywhere. Everyday he goes for his morning dig. The End.
