Summer Arts Activities: Performance Notes by Adam DeBacker, age 10

CATS- stage musical at Hammons Hall June 24, 2008

T. S. Eliot wrote the poems about cats. "Jellicle Cats" means "dear little cat." T. S. Eliot's niece called her cat "dear little cat" and it sounded like "Jellicle Cat", so he made a poem about it. The sets were great with lot of details. I loved the cats' costumes and the makeup. And I loved the dancing. One of the cats was Asparagus. He was a theater cat and he was remembering his younger days when he was a pirate. It all started when he was a rough cat. He had a crew and had a wife and fought Siamese cats. Bustopher Jones was another cat. He was a Fat Cat who had money and goes out on the town. He likes to be entertained, dress stylishly and eat well.

I loved the songs. That's for sure! Charlie Brown was very good when he sang the Kite Song. He acted out the song. I tried to see where the kite was, but there was no kite. The actor was doing a pantomime. Lucy is bossy. She is always wanting some kind of music, but Schroeder doesn't play the music she wants. He plays Beethoven. He doesn't like to be bossed around. Snoopy is a dog who never gets supper. Linus snuggles his blanket always, and Lucy tries to get it. Charlie Brown has a little sister named Sally. She get grades in school like C's or D's and then she makes a big fuss after it.

The original music was from Cole Porter. I loved the music and dancing and kissing. The sets made me want to ride on the boat. The cast was remarkable- and you know what? I wanted to dance with the cast. They were great mimes.
